Boys soccer: Attractive play not enough for Patriots to topple Saints By Neil Pierson Spectators at Tuesday's boys soccer match at Interlake High School might have been confused about which team won a state title last season. Liberty dominated possession, earned 10 corner kicks and put six shots on target. But the visitors’ fluid attack didn’t yield any results and one defensive lapse cost them the game. Interlake’s Noah Parsons scored on a 13th-minute header and the Saints used stellar play from goalkeeper Sam Dawson to pick up a 1-0 victory over the Patriots in Class 3A/2A KingCo Conference action in Bellevue. Liberty coach Darren Tremblay said his team’s latest outing was a microcosm of the whole season. The Patriots (2-5-2 KingCo) have been competitive in every game, but outside of a 6-0 demolition of Sammamish, haven’t been scoring goals with any regularity. Including nonleague games, the Patriots have scored multiple goals only three times in 12 tries. “It’s hard to be mad because we played well,” Tremblay said. “We played well but goals just haven’t come. They’ve got to come – it’s just a matter of time.” Interlake, the defending 3A state champion, scored with its first shot of the night as Austin Ball’s throw-in found Parsons inside a crowded penalty area. Parsons got just enough power on his header to deflect it off the far post and past Liberty goalkeeper Austin Surber. Surber made a solid save 10 minutes later to deny Ball, but the remainder of the first half belonged largely to the Patriots, who used outside backs Lucas Frey and Michael Daly to attack the full width of the pitch. Dawson, however, wouldn’t be beaten. He palmed aside an Ethan Diaz try from 15 yards and made a spectacular diving save to rob Davis Noblat from a similar distance. “We’re getting good looks. We’re just not finishing them,” Tremblay remarked. “We need to create a little more, but hats off to their keeper tonight. He was very good.” The second half was more of the same, although the Saints kept the Patriots on their toes with some dangerous counterattacks. Liberty piled on pressure in the final 10 minutes but missed two golden chances. Cody Hughes flubbed an open shot from six yards in the 72nd minute and Diaz shot wide after running behind the defense in the 77th. Liberty outshot Interlake, 12-9, and only two of the Saints’ chances were on target. Milo Larson replaced Surber at halftime and dealt with some tricky plays, but didn’t make any saves. The Patriots were working with a short bench as six players were out due to academic commitments, including senior captain Tyler Wray on defense. Tremblay praised his two freshmen, Noblat and Dillon Sturm, who worked their way onto the field at the start of the season and haven’t relinquished their spots. “It has been a nice surprise for freshmen to be able to step up like that and not just make varsity, but start,” he said. “And Davis being our leading scorer, it has been great. Those two, they play like they’re 17 or 18.” The Patriots visit Bellevue at 7:30 p.m. Friday and, if they haven’t already done so, can clinch a berth in the 2A playoffs when they finish the regular season at winless Sammamish on Friday, May 6. “We have to finish ahead of Sammamish,” Tremblay said. “That’s our No. 1 goal. It looks like that’s going to happen unless something miraculous happens. “It’s good preparation for postseason – we love these teams, these tough games. Every one has been a nail-biter … We’ve been in every game and come postseason, who knows? We could make a run.” |
