2017-2018 State 2A Champs!!
LHS Boys Tennis Team won State! Bryan Le and Marco Sobrino of Liberty defeated Calvin and Colby Vuong (also of Liberty High School) in the State Finals that concluded on Saturday. YES, you read it correctly – the LHS Doubles Team of Bryan Le / Marco Sobrino defeated the LHS Doubles Team of Calvin and Colby Vuong to win the State Championship!!
Because of the success Bryan/Marco and Calvin/Colby experienced – the LHS Boys Tennis also won the State Team Championship! What a tremendous accomplishment.
There was also representation from the LHS Girls Tennis Team at State in the name of Luciana Sobrino who was a 7th Place finisher in Girls Singles.
There are numerous sub-stories behind our successful Tennis Program at Liberty. One of the biggest, yet perhaps less known is –
Bryan Le, one of Liberty’s State Champions also qualified to compete at State….in Track! Indeed, Bryan qualified at Districts to run in 4 different race events at the State Track competition which was held during the same dates and times as State Tennis and lucky for LHS Tennis, Bryan chose to compete in Tennis! Qualifying for State in 2 different sports is VERY uncommon!

9/9/16 Mercer Island
On Sept 9th, LHS Boys played against Mercer Island – perennial KingCo 3A champions and came away with a 1-6 loss. Playing well and coming away with the sole LHS Boys was the #1 Doubles Team of Ethan & Bryan Le who defeated the #1 Mercer Island Doubles Team by the score of 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
An article in the Seattle Times listed our boys team as one to watch for this year:
Liberty: The Patriots were second to Sehome for the Class 2A title last May, and relied on their doubles teams to get there. Both teams that placed in 2016 return for Liberty, with third-place finishers Cody Hughes (senior) and Marco Sobrino (junior) leading the way. Brother tandem Ethan and Bryan Le, a senior and sophomore, were fourth.

Coach's Comment: The LHS Men had a very successful experience at the 2016 2A State Tournament.
In addition to earning 2nd Place in the Team Award category, the LHS Mens Team came away from State with exceptional performances.
Senior and Team Captain Marek Pierepiekarz was the recipient of a bad-luck draw and faced two very difficult opponents in his final tournament action as a member of the LHS Tennis Team. Marek lost both of his matches.
LHS's #1 Doubles Team of Ethan Le and Bryan Le had a very good tournament. The team won its first two matches but in the quarterfinals they faced the team that went on to win the entire tournament. Making the match against the eventual winners even more climatic was the fact that Ethan and Bryan lost in 3 sets with the match being determined by a tie-breaker! AND the final score of the tie-break was 10-12! Ethan and Bryan went on to win their final 2 matches earning them 4th Place in the tournament.
LHS's #2 Doubles Team of Marco Sobrino and Cody Hughes also had a successful tournament. The team won their way to the semifinals before they too had the challenge of facing the same Doubles team that Ethan and Bryan faced and the same team that went on to win the tournament. Although our LHS #2 Doubles fought hard, they were defeated. In their final match of the tournament, Cody and Marco defeated the team from Lindbergh to take 3rd Place overall in the tournament!

Coach's Comment: "I did a bit of research on past Bellevue-Liberty Matches. In 2008, a LHS Doubles Team (Sam Andres & Matt Weik) defeated their Bellevue opponent to give Liberty a sole win in what turned out being an overall 6-1 victory for Bellevue. In 2010, LHS’s Michael Payant defeated his #2 Bellevue Singles opponent AND Sho & Ken Kato defeated their #2 Doubles opponent to account for the second victory in what otherwise resulted in a Bellevue 5-2 victory. In all other years, LHS had not been able to win one court in matches against Bellevue. In yesterday’s Bellevue Match: Naoki Lucas(Singles), Ethan & Brian Le (Doubles) and Colby & Calvin Vuong (Doubles) won their courts for 3 LHS wins! Marco Sobrino and the LHS Doubles Team of Devin Emerson & Christian Wong played well. At the conclusion of the Match, the Bellevue coach congratulated the LHS Team with deserved compliments." 9/29 Juanita

The Fall LHS Boys Tennis will begin with practices at the NEW LHS Tennis Courts on Monday August 24th from 2:30PM – 5PM. This year’s Tennis Program will be exciting for several reasons but perhaps most significant is the fact that we will be playing LHS Tennis back on the campus of LHS! There is preliminary work required of all participants before August 24 – specifically, Registration. Registration is necessary and must be completed BEFORE any player is allowed to participate in practice. Also, because W.I.A.A. regulations require that each player attend a minimum of 10 practices before playing in a competition AND because our season schedule normally begins 10 days from the start of practice – it is imperative that every LHS Tennis Boy have his Registration information completed & submitted to the Athletic Department Office BEFORE August 24th! Registration for Fall Sports begins Monday, Aug 10th, from 8am – 12pm in the LHS Athletic Dept Office. Please be sure your plans and schedule include complying with the above. A link to the Registration information required is: http://www.issaquah.wednet.edu/family/sports/HSsports If you are aware of any LHS Boys who might be interested in joining LHS Tennis, please feel free to share this information with him. The top LHS Boys tennis players played a tournament pre-qualifying competition against Sammamish HS. The qualifier pitted the top 2 singles players from both schools and the top 2 doubles teams from both schools in a "winner goes on to play in next week's tournament and loser goes home."
In Singles, Naoki Lucas was paired against Sammamish HS's Ethan Romney (a State Tournament Finalist in 2013). Naoki fought hard but the experience of Romney proved too much for LHS's Naoki Lucas who lost in two sets. In the other Singles match, LHS's Keaten Winegar defeated SHS's Joe Inoue, 6-1, 6-1 for LHS's first win of the day. In Doubles action, the top LHS Doubles Team of Marek Pierepiekarz & Matthew Cao garnered the 2nd victory for the Patriots with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ryan Ching & Yodae Lin. Welcome LHS StudentDear Liberty High School Prospective Tennis Player,
I have learned that you have expressed interest in playing tennis at Liberty High. This message is intended to provide you with important information regarding the LHS Tennis Program. To begin, the Boys Tennis season begins next Monday, August 25th. Because the LHS Tennis Courts are under construction, the Team will temporarily use the tennis courts located at Tibbetts Valley Park in Issaquah. Address: 965 - 12th Avenue NW, Issaquah. Boys Tennis practice begins on Monday, August 25th at 2:30PM and will continue until 5PM. This schedule will continue for the entire first week and likely until school begins. Once school commences, LHS Tennis will become an after school activity. Boys will be advised in advance of changes to schedule. Parents will be required to provide transportation home each day for players. Of immediate concern for parents is – playing a high school sport requires the completion of registration. No student will be allowed to participate without completing and successfully submitting registration forms to the Liberty High Athletic Office. If your plans are to compete in tennis for LHS, I strongly encourage you to contact the LHS Athletic Dept and submit the required forms prior to the first day of practice. LHS Tennis is considered a “no-cut” sport. Unless there is an exceptionally high turnout of players, there will likely not be any cuts and everyone will be included on this year’s Team. Important for players to be aware as we begin the Tennis season – boys need to wear tennis/sports clothing. Sneakers, light-weight shirts, and shorts with pockets are expected. Players are expected to have & bring their own tennis rackets. There are a few Team tennis rackets available for players if they do not currently have one. Also, because air temperature is likely to be warm or even hot – players should bring drinking water with them to practice. Remaining properly hydrated is important. Thanks for your interest in participating in the LHS Tennis Program. I look forward to a very successful season. I also look forward to meeting you next Monday, August 25, beginning at 2:30PM at Tibbetts Park. Go Patriots! Respectfully, Mike Salokas, Coach LHS Tennis |

Although rain canceled the first day of the 2013 Boys Tennis KingCo Tournament – play got underway today with many exciting matches. LHS Boys faired reasonably well with Cody Hughes & Keaten Winegar losing in two sets to the doubles team from Interlake HS. Justice Canley & Matthew Cao defeated a doubles team from Juanita and earned the right to play again, tomorrow. Another LHS doubles team - Tyler Le & Aaron Burk fell victims to a very talented Mercer Island team.
In singles play, Ethan Le played well but unfortunately lost to a top-rated Bellevue HS player. Naoki Lucas also had a very difficult opponent from Interlake and lost in two sets. Marek Pierepiekarz was able to defeat the top-ranked singles player from Mt Si to move on to competition on Wednesday.
